Common Application Platforms (CAP)
The Internet revolution has drastically changed the business landscape. Business cycles are getting shorter and boundaries have become fuzzier. Technology takes on a global outlook and applications are rolled out at breakneck speeds. To meet these challenges, ST Electronics embarked on an ambitious programme to develop a unique re-usable architecture that combines the software development process with a component-based software product suite.
The Common Application Platform (CAP) programme kicked off in early 1998 with development funding from National Science & Technology Board / Economic Development Board. This platform was defined and prototyped by end 1998, with a first version released in mid 1999. By mid 2000, CAP was used in Command and Control (C2) mission critical projects which were worth more than S$20 million. During 2001, CAP was applied commercially in Hong Kong when ST Electronics (Info-Software Systems) was awarded a US$56 million contract with the Hong Kong Fire Services Department to implement their Third Generation Mobilising System (TGMS).
CAP consists of three main parts:
- The Software Best Practices Development Process (p CAP)
- The Integrated Internet/Windows Component Application Platform (i CAP)
- The Java/J2EE Component Application Platform (j CAP)
