ST Electronics Sets Up Research And Development Centre In Interactive Media

Singapore, 30 July 2008 — ST Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) today announced that its subsidiary, ST Electronics (Training & Simulation Systems) Pte Ltd (STEE-T&S) has set up a research and development Centre in Interactive Media (CiM) to develop Interactive Digital Media (IDM) technologies for the Simulation, Animation, Games and Edutainment (SAGE) domains.  CiM participates actively in the initiatives set out by the multi-agency IDM R&D Programme Office (IDMPO) which is hosted by the Media Development Authority.  This includes collaborating with leading local and overseas Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) to develop solutions for inter-connectivity, advanced physics based modeling, realistic virtual entities and advanced interactivity. To date, CiM has kicked off several projects including the development of a Virtual Platform and a Co-Space Framework.

Using simulation technologies in model development and automatic model deployment, the Virtual Platform Framework will significantly shorten the development time for games, simulation and other virtual world applications.

The Co-Space Framework is the creation of a common platform that all virtual systems can ride on. This common platform defines the infrastructure backbone that has substantial flexibility, robustness and configurability that would enable different ‘systems of systems’ to interact seamlessly as a single system across domains. The Co-Space Framework can be applied beyond just simulation-related systems; it can be extended to include a wide spectrum of domains, including serious games and the gaming world.

Today CiM signed an agreement with the China-Singapore Institute of Digital Media (CSIDM) to co-develop Human-Computer Interface technologies at IDMPO’s i.JAM Networking Session.  CSIDM will contribute the base technology for intelligent imaging processing and CiM will productise and integrate them for their SAGE applications.

ST Electronics is a key player in the interactive digital media arena. We are delighted to have received strong support from MDA during the course of setting up our Centre of Interactive Media (CiM).  We look forward to developing more leading technologies in the Simulation, Animation, Games and Edutainment domains through the newly set up CiM.

SEAH Moon Ming,
President, ST Electronics

CSIDM in Singapore is the first overseas R&D institute set up by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. CSIDM is excited to collaborate with CiM in our first commercial project to develop and commercialise advanced Human-Computer Interface technologies. We look forward to more collaborations with ST Electronics and other local partners.

LOW Chin Chau,
Executive Director, CSIDM

We are glad to see local flagship media companies embracing new media and committing their resources in IDM R&D. More importantly, they are able to benefit and tap on the R&D effort of research centres in Singapore to collaborate and uncover more innovative applications and services. ST Electronics CiM’s collaboration with CSIDM is a case in point. We hope to see more of such partnership in the future and in the long run, position Singapore as a preferred location for innovation and R&D in IDM.

Michael YAP,
Executive Director, IDM R&D Programme Office

China-Singapore Institute of Digital Media (CSIDM) is a collaboration between the renowned Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Automation (CASIA) and the Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore.  CSIDM aims to enable hundreds of millions of Chinese and non-Chinese to communicate seamlessly through language mediation, learning, and immersion technologies. CSIDM will involve some 40 researchers from China working on interactive digital media (IDM) research and development. This is the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ first overseas R&D lab
