ST Electronics Awarded FutureSchools@Singapore Project

To develop e-Learning solutions for two schools, Beacon Primary School and Hwa Chong Institution

Singapore, 13 May 2008 — Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) today announced that its subsidiary, ST Electronics (Training & Simulation Systems) Pte. Ltd., has been awarded the FutureSchools@Singapore project by the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore to provide cutting-edge interactive e-learning solutions for Beacon Primary School and Hwa Chong Institution.

The FutureSchools@Singapore project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MOE) and IDA.  The FutureSchools@Singapore project seeks to effectively harness infocomm and Interactive Digital Media (IDM) for engaged learning.

ST Electronics is awarded two of five schools that are participating in the FutureSchools@Singapore. This project requires ST Electronics to tailor e-Learning solutions to meet the different foci and independent needs of Beacon Primary School and Hwa Chong Institution and deliver the e-learning solutions over a period of four years starting from January 2008.

ST Electronics’ experience in simulation training, virtualisation and digital animation which spans over two decades will ensure that students enjoy the experiential learning environment of the virtual world.  It will develop an immersive virtual learning environment for Beacon Primary School which has been newly set-up under this initiative as a model of the FutureSchool.  The virtualisation environment and integrated web-based virtual learning environment will allow students to explore ideas and abstract concepts in simulated scenarios that will challenge their understanding and deepen their learning in new concepts.  (See attached Fact Sheet for solutions details)

For Hwa Chong Institution, a renowned campus in Singapore and overseas, the focus is geared towards developing learners with a global perspective by drawing from international educational platforms. To achieve this goal, ST Electronics will develop a borderless learning environment that transcends boundaries posed by different subjects, classrooms, schools, countries and even cultures.  Known as the HCnX, the borderless learning environment will be equipped with state-of-the-art student-centric Learning Management Systems.

IDA's collaboration with MOE and industry brings together partners to harness infocomm innovatively and effectively for engaged learning, and to keep our education system relevant in preparing students for the future. This builds on IDA’s iN2015 Masterplan’s efforts for the Education and Learning sector to use infocomm to develop potential schools into peaks of excellence and spearhead the transformation of the education sector.  The industry brings its expertise and experience to develop next generation solutions that will further enhance learning and teaching in schools.

Chief Executive Officer, IDA

This project reinforces ST Electronics’ standing in the e-Learning industry.  We see ourselves uniquely positioned to address the requirements of FutureSchools@Singapore comprehensively, given our strong capabilities in ICT, simulation, animation, and edutainment.  We are honoured to be given this opportunity to participate in this project and will contribute our part towards the transformation of Singapore's education system.
