Singapore, 26 December 2005 — An automated fare card system from Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) was today commissioned at the official opening of the first phase of Guangzhou’s MRT Line 4 by Guang Zhou Metro Corporation. This phase has been named the Guangzhou Higher Education Center Special Line.
Mr Chan Soo Sen, Singapore's Minister of State for Education and Trade &
Industry, graced the occasion.
ST Electronics was awarded the RMB 71.2 million (approximately S$15 million)
project to provide an efficient and user-friendly ticketing and fare collection
system for Line 4 in March 2004.
This system facilitates the smooth traffic of passengers through control gates located at the entrance and exit points of every MRT station. It includes line computers, station computers, ticket vending machines, automatic gates, ticket checking machines and ticket office machines. Entry and exit at the MRT stations are controlled through the use of contactless cards and tokens.
The first phase of this project covers five underground stations and the operational control centre (OCC). The Guangzhou Line 4 stretches 14.11km and consists of 11 stations and one OCC. This network will benefit thousands of passengers who commute along a North-South axis daily. The remaining stations are scheduled to be opened at the end of 2006.
"The Guangzhou MRT Line 4 was a milestone contract for ST Electronics as it marked our entry into the Chinese rail market. The commissioning of the Line and our automatic fare collection system demonstrates our ability to deliver quality and cost-effective rail systems solutions in this region."
