Launch of World's Smallest VSAT at Global Security Asia 2005

Singapore, 24 March 2005 — Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) launches its latest innovation - the miniV®, the world’s smallest portable Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) in its class. Making its first public appearance at the Global Security Asia 2005 (GSA 2005) exhibition, the miniV is used for satellite communications and is designed to be compact and highly portable to meet the demands of every critical mission. The miniV is a revolutionary system developed by Agilis Communication Technologies Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of ST Electronics Ltd. ST Electronics is the electronics arm of Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd.

The miniV will be unveiled on 29 March 2005, at GSA 2005 by the Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Wong Kan Seng.

Fully designed and developed in Singapore, the miniV employs leading edge technologies that are patent-pending. It promises to revolutionise the existing wireless broadband communication industry.

miniV is lightweight and cost-effective and with a size that is less than 10% of any conventional VSAT, it can easily fit into a suitcase. The miniV can be deployed to serve a wide range of robust broadband applications and services and can function anywhere, in all weather conditions in both urban and remote environments as well as at sea. The miniV is now being trial tested by selected international customers and in particular, it was site-tested under harsh conditions in Banda Aceh in Tsunami affected areas. In critical mission circumstances, the miniV can be rapidly deployed and operated in less than ten minutes by one person.

The system permits simultaneous voice telephony, video streaming and data transmission with IPpacket routing. The miniV can be plugged into a public or private network, operating seamlessly with varying communications infrastructure, secured fixed and mobile networks and other communications systems.

miniV is ideally suited for disaster relief operations, satellite news gathering, oil and gas operations, mining operations, remote construction sites and defence applications.

“The miniV offers broadband access to places where terrestrial means are unavailable, unreliable, or unsuitable. This state-of-the-art product has worked well under demanding conditions, and is most ideal for public security and disaster relief operations. Its size, robustness and portability make it highly valued in areas where infrastructure is destroyed or lacking, such as disaster areas, where it can help establish lines of communications rapidly which are vital in restoring the situation.”

miniV® FACT SHEET

The miniV® is designed with high portability and mobility in mind to enable operations anytime, anywhere globally under the footprint of Intelsat satellites. Agilis’ miniV is the world’s smallest portable VSAT terminal in its class. Weighing less than 20kg and fitted neatly into a casing of 360mm X 240mm X 15mm, the miniV is highly portable. The miniV can be set-up by just one person in less than 10 minutes.

miniV works on Intelsat C-band satellite and offers selectable transmission rates from 19.2 to 128 kbps currently. Other variants with transmission rates running up to 256kbps, 512 kbps and beyond, operations in VHF, UHF, X-, Ku- and Ka-band frequencies, are a part of the product development roadmap.

The miniV has built-in Internet Protocol (IP) router that connects easily with any IP network and telephone via its integrated Ethernet interface, including a built-in IP phone with phone book and integrated GPS. MiniV is capable of broadcast and multicast broadband communication. The miniV also supports remote LAN environment.

The miniV is designed base on a number of in-house developed cutting-edge technologies. We employ a patented antenna technology that transforms a conventional parabolic 2.4m antenna dish into a flat antenna array that is of dimension 0.40mX0.25m. The heart of the terminal is a software configurable platform, termed the “Darwin” platform, ready to be future Software Defined Radio compliant. This allows user to configure access scheme, modulations and coding at anytime via simple software commands. The most advanced signal modulation and coding techniques are developed and used in miniV, giving it unprecedented signal to noise performance. Even very weak signals below noise level are properly processed and identified by the Darwin platform.

The miniV is designed based on open standards and leveraging on commercially available components where advancement in technology is accelerating at a phenomenal pace. It is of modular design, enabling flexible integration of external modules such as proprietary media adapters and customised protocols without influencing the other existing components. Welldefined interfaces also enable seamless integration with any network systems.
