The Ultimate Battlefield Representation System

Orlando, USA, 6 December 2004 — ST Training and Simulation (STTS), together with a team of leading players in the training and simulation industry, has initiated a development program to develop a state of the art system that caters to both end users and solution developers. The team comprises STTS, BVR Systems Ltd (BVR Systems) and HarTech Systems (HarTech). STTS is a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) the electronics arm of Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd.

The team aims to create the ultimate battlefield representation system through its proprietary Super Scenario Generator (SSG). Battlefield generation is no longer used simply to generate simplistic targets to facilitate individual skills training and small troops collaboration. Instead, battlefield generation needs to support different modeling fidelities, behavioral adaptability to variable operational situations and ease of participation in sophisticated joint combat training systems. The development of the SSG will provide users with ease of use and flexibility in adaptability and configurability of the synthetic environment to accommodate participants to operate seamlessly while integrating different middleware and the battlefield resolutions, which will be system specific.

The team’s breakthrough SSG architectural concept is aimed at looking inwards at the simulation from the participant's point of view, providing stems into the kernel from where the participant's perspective can be built inwards. This will create a new building standard for all future simulation systems and at the same time enabling full interoperability with legacy DIS and HLA systems. With the full fledge SSG architecture in place, the connectivity and training of real forces with virtual and constructive trainers, own-ship and legacy systems through a mix of middleware (DIS/HLA/Data-Links/GSM/etc), will be realizable.

By adopting advanced Artificial Intelligence techniques with independent software modules that contain the knowledge for each one of the participating systems, the SSG platform provides users with a complete tactical environment that enables all levels of simulation ranging from single trainers to advanced wargame systems at both tactical and strategic levels.

This highly motivated team of STTS, BVR Systems and HarTech is also in discussion with a leading European training company who has expressed its intention to join in this effort.

Encompassing Simulation Architecture of the future
Joint Operation & Training System

A new development program has been initiated by a team of leading players in the Training & Simulation industry to develop a state of the art system that is catered to both end users as well as product/solution developers worldwide. The team from ST Training & Simulation Pte Ltd (lead), BVR Systems Ltd. and HarTech System aims to create the ultimate battlefield representation system through its proprietary Super Scenario Generator (SSG).

Gone are the days when the Computer Generated Forces (CGF) system are used simply as targets to support individual skills training and small troops collaboration. Future CGF must be able to support on-the-fly reconfigurable modeling fidelity, behavioral adaptability to variable operational situations and ease of participation in sophisticated joint combat training systems. The emphasis of the SSG is on the ease of use as well as the extent of adaptability and configurability of the CGF with respect to the specific target system that it is required to operate in. The participants of future Joint Combat systems need not necessarily be pre-defined. Instead, the SSG will accommodate the different needs of the participants to allow seamless interoperability. The different middleware and the battlefield resolution will be system specific.

The traditional simulation system is oriented from the simulation kernel inside out. The participant is bounded by the specific language and fidelity of the system. The team’s breakthrough SSG architectural concept, on the other hand, is aimed at looking inwards at the simulation from the participant's point of view. The SSG simulation kernel architecture will provide stems into the kernel from where the participant's perspective can be built inwards. With this architectural concept, the SSG is set to create a new building standard for all future simulation systems and at the same time enabling full interoperability with legacy DIS and HLA systems. With the full fledge SSG architecture in place, the connectivity and training of real forces with virtual and constructive trainers, own-ship and legacy systems through a mix of middleware (DIS/HLA/Data-Links/GSM/…), will be realizable.

With respect to the capability to harness additional physical resources, the SSG system architecture’s agile and nimble design will allow linear scalability with additional computation power resources, without affecting the application’s architecture. As such, the SSG platform provides the user with a complete tactical environment that enables all levels of simulation ranging from single trainers to advanced wargame systems at both tactical and strategic levels.

The SSG system adopts advanced AI techniques using independent software modules that contain the knowledge for each one of the participating systems, to develop the appropriate representation for the data that they are to be represented (Participant-specific approach).

The new SSG architecture will improve on:

a.
Code reusability
The architecture addresses the componentization approach towards the development of software modules as building block components. This approach drives software development on SSG towards optimal code reusability.
b.
Creation of standard simulation model repository.
c.
At the core of the SSG system is a repository where relevance and reference can be facilitated. The architecture supports the building up of a repository of models that can support easy switching between participants; between systems and between different projects that are based on the SSG architecture.
d.
Support of intelligence assessment of generation models.
High fidelity battlefield generator supporting all level of aggregation, from the Brigade level down to the individual level. Attachment and detachment of forces can be done on the fly.
e.
Support of Effect Based Operation (EBO) Simulation to enable high level strategic Wargaming and mission support tools.

The team comprises retired and experienced high-ranking officers from all three military services contributing expertise to fulfill the system’s operational needs. System architects from the arcade game and simulation industries are also engaged to support the development of a joint-operations training system using simulation systems as well as commercial games.

The team is opened to other industry players to participate in the collaboration. Currently, the team is in the midst of talks with a leading European training company who has expressed its intention to join in this effort.
