Southeast Florida, Indian River County, 26 October 2004 — Intelect Technologies Incorporated (Intelect) was able to assist Florida in disaster recovery by providing continued communications for emergency services to function after Hurricane Frances swept through on 4 September 2004 with winds of 105 mph (169 kph). Hurricane Frances, a category 2 storm, had caused damage to buildings and properties, destroyed power lines and fiber optic cables. Intelect is a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited.
Intelect’s OmniLYNX, a redundant system, shifted into protection mode and continued to provide uninterrupted communications between the 911 center and various law enforcement and emergency service providers during the storm. Once the storm passed the fiber optic cable was repaired and OmniLYNX shifted back to normal operation, without intervention and continued to provide uninterrupted service.
Mr. Terry Smith, Telecommunications Manager for Indian River County, said “The OmniLYNX system performed well to maintain communications during the storm.”
Milledge Adams, customer service engineer on duty during this emergency, September 7, 2004, said, “We were able to help Indian River County personnel locate the fiber break by remotely connecting to the OmniLYNX system and using the network manager to locate the nodes that were in protect mode.”
Ng Kim Hock, CEO of Intelect Technologies, said, “We see this incident as a validation of our product for mission-critical applications. Clearly a loss of communication will be a real problem for law enforcement and emergency service providers to manage a crisis. The OmniLYNX is a fiber optic multiplexer equipment that converges voice, data, video and LAN services for effective and efficient communications.
