SINGAPORE, 18 October 2004 — Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) has offered its patented digital watermarking solution, StegMark™ ImageLITE for use with the world’s leading scanner manufacturer, Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (HP). With this bundled solution, ST Electronics and HP provide first of its kind, scanner solution that offers protection to your digital content. This partnership is carried out through ST Electronics’ subsidiary DataMark Technologies Pte Ltd (DataMark).
The digital watermarking software is ready for shipment with selected HP scanner models for the Asia Pacific region from October 2004. Both HP and DataMark hope to rollout the software worldwide by early 2005. The solution is targeted at the small medium business (SMB) market that may not find high-end digital document archival systems suited to their needs. StegMark ImageLITE provides a cost effective and out-of-the-box solution that allows users to embed a unique invisible ID into scanned documents for copyrights protection and authenticity verification. This is possible with StegMark ImageLITE, as the documents are scanned, watermarked, archived or distributed electronically. Users need not fear using forged or tampered digital contents unwittingly as they can verify the authenticity of documents prior to any future usage, and they can prove the documents’ authenticity through the electronically embedded unique ID.
In addition to the bundled software, HP will provide an online verification portal for users to verify watermarked images created by this software. This convenient service will be available on HP’s website (www.hp.com/apac/scanjetsecurity) enabling digital contents such as electronic documents, photographs, etc to be verified online.

StegMark’s robust digital watermarks are designed to withstand any major changes in the watermarked digital image. Such major changes, which may be made accidentally or maliciously, include content alteration, compression, format change, cropping, etc. Critical information such as ID, date and time information could be used as robust digital watermarks.
StegMark’s fragile digital watermarks are designed to detect the slightest changes in the watermarked digital image. Fragile digital watermarks will ensure that the digital image has not been modified. In an event when the digital image has been altered, the fragile watermark can even indicate the regions in which a modification has taken place.
Digital Document Scanners
Legal and insurance companies deal with a numerous official documents for law
enforcement and even as court evidence. These documents are usually stamped
to indicate that they are certified copies for physical distribution to ensure
its originality. Filing of these documents requires physical storage place
and it is time consuming to locate the documents for retrieval.
Using StegMark, these official documents are scanned, embedded with robust watermarks to verify the date of origin and ownership. The documents can then be electronically distributed and/or filed. The fragile watermarks in the documents are used to detect any tampering in the document.
Digital Still Cameras
With improving digital imaging technologies, professional photographers are
rapidly replacing their film-based cameras with digital ones. However, authenticity
problems pertaining to digital imaging still exist. Today’s digital
imaging editing software is so advanced that the man-in-the-street can easily
modify or replicate a digital image. Protection of copyright of images become
of paramount importance when professional photographers need to protect their
intellectual property or when digital entries need to be authenticated for
official uses or in a photography competition.
StegMark is able to address the authenticity of the digital photographs by embedding robust watermarks for time stamping and fragile watermarks to detect any changes in the photographs or images.
Digital Video Cameras
In many commercial buildings where security is of importance, it is common
to see an analog or film-based surveillance camera system in place. With
the numerous advantages of digital technology, it is not inconceivable that
digital systems will replace these analog systems in the near future. Similarly,
with other digital equipment, digital surveillance camera systems will also
face authenticity problems with digital video taken at buildings. Law enforcement
agencies may find it difficult to present digital evidence in the Courts
of Law if authenticity of the digital video cannot be ascertained.
StegMark is able to ensure that digital videos taken at these locations can be authentic and were indeed taken from the specified locations.
Digital Phone Cameras
In today’s modern world, digital phone cameras are common daily gadgets
that most people have and use. In the event of a traffic or fire accident,
the man-in-the-street will be able to capture these important moments to be
sent to their insurance companies as proof. Similarly, in an event of a criminal
act, civic conscious public may also aid law enforcement agencies by capturing
authentic photographs for evidence purposes.
